Teaching and Diversity Statement

My aim as an educator, whether in the classroom or in private lessons, is to help my students to find their own voices as performers, composers, and citizens of the world, and instill in them a lifelong appreciation and passion for music.  I strive to create a safe space for my students to express themselves and be self-advocates, through the following methods:

  1. Introducing and promoting a diverse range of musical repertoire and influences, ensuring that women, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC performers, composers, and creators are represented, setting an example for voices as diverse as my (prospective) students’ to be heard and respected;

  2. Promoting self-creation and self-reflection as an integral part of an immersive learning experience; and

  3. Meeting all of my students where they are and adapting to each student’s needs, embracing growth rather than perfection.

I have student teaching experience in kindergarten through eighth-grade (ages 5-14) general and choral music in an urban public school setting, and have worked with students from various cultural backgrounds in this capacity, as well as special needs and ELL (English Language Learner) students. Additionally, I have served as a private composition tutor to college-level music students, who have gone on to have their works commissioned, and apply for graduate composition programs.
